However, individuals or smaller groups can also find seclusion by retreating to corners or lounge chairs, appreciating the intimacy provided by the space. The terrace, in a U shape, surrounds the stretched reflective water surface and takes advantage of the topography, embracing the infinity pool that seems to flow into the distant sea when viewed from the house. Protruding from the back wall of the twenty-meter pool, there is a unique contemporary sculpture depicting a yogi woman on a postament, conveying lightness and airiness in its material, simultaneously playing a dual role: visible and yet not, present but not disturbing the infinite panorama in the background when observed from the terrace. The courtyard is bordered by closed-open walls on the side, with arches cut out of white surfaces adorned with bamboo lattice, creating a connection with the surrounding greenery while decisively enclosing the villa oasis. The terrace around the pool, essentially a closed internal courtyard, also refers to traditional Thai construction with internal atrium houses, typically featuring a water fountain or well in the middle.

The primary driving force behind the architectural design of this level was to maximize the utilization of the fantastic panorama, allowing the view to fill most of the internal and external spaces. The arrangement of spaces and the orientation of the terrace and the infinity pool played a crucial role. Both the dining area and the living room reveal a splendid panorama towards the sea and distant mountains.

In addition to the communal spaces, a fully functional, independent two-bedroom suite has been created on the upper floor, complete with all its comforts and luxuries: a separate kitchen, living room, bathroom, and spacious yet intimate spaces. The main visual motif is coral, appearing in unique wallpapers and textiles. Natural stone is featured in the bathroom, while stone and wood surfaces also emerge in the bedroom, bringing in elements of the natural world. This connection with the natural world extends from more intimate spaces into the dining area and living room, complemented by natural stone wall surfaces. Unique design furniture and handmade crafts sourced from the surroundings further enhance the uniqueness of the spaces.

As this level hosts the communal life of the villa and gathers the most people, an expansive kitchen is accompanied by a preparatory catering kitchen to ensure comfort. With this setup, guests who feel completely at home in their surroundings can experience a five-star hotel service.

The layout of the two suites is roughly identical. Both function as fully-equipped apartments with blue-themed two bedrooms, private outdoor and indoor living areas, kitchens, and covered terraces where guests can interact with each other or retreat separately, enjoying intimacy and tranquility. The yoga and massage pavilion in the garden enhances this experience. In each suite, everyone can live their own life as they have access to full amenities and maximum comfort.

This level has direct access to the bordering street, allowing guests to arrive here through a separate entrance without disturbing other residents of the villa. Connection with the other levels is established through an outdoor spiral staircase. Like the other suites in the villa, the internal spaces on this level have unique and thematic designs. The two main motifs that inspired the names of the suites are the garden and orchids. These elements manifest in the interior aesthetics and ambiance, most prominently in the distinctive JAB wallpapers, upholstery, textiles, decorative pillows, and bedspreads. Alongside textiles, the spacious areas are diversified and warmed by wooden surfaces appearing in various locations, including wooden doors and blackout blinds, providing a human-scale touch. Natural stone in the bathrooms and limestone elsewhere contribute to a sense of closeness to nature, aligning well with Thai construction traditions.

Guests staying in the Sky Suite are greeted by a separate living room, kitchen, and bathroom. They can access this floor through a separate entrance, allowing them to decide whether they want to actively participate in the villa’s life or retreat to more intimate spaces. For them, the option is available to enjoy their coffee on the terrace, which, though narrower, offers a completely unobstructed view thanks to the glass railing. Alternatively, they can savor their lunch prepared in the kitchen in the living room, surrounded by vast glass surfaces that provide an almost panoramic view. In the evening, they can indulge in cocktails under the stars. Similar to every level, here too, there’s a dedicated space for relaxation and recreation—a terrace on the side of the suite, and on the top of the middle level, a space designed for seclusion and yoga.

The upper floor is only partially built, with a smaller footprint than the lower levels, but this contributes to the villa’s rhythm, dynamics, distinctive contours, and overall lightness. The gently intertwining extended arches and the curved roof providing shade for the middle level create clean surfaces, offering a unique architectural dialogue.

In the case of the villa standing on the summit of Samui Island, a harmonious blend of contemporary architectural expression with tradition and nature was achieved. The use of clean materials and colors instills tranquility, providing the necessary modern elegance that seamlessly integrates with motifs and solutions typical of Thai traditional architecture. The prominent use of natural materials, such as limestone in every bedroom and bathroom, finely crafted wooden surfaces and blinds, and bamboo in the separating fences, introduces the atmosphere of lightweight bungalows characteristic of the region into the refined, elegant spaces. Large canvas frames divide the spaces, adorned with long bamboo rods. Alongside the strategically placed design objects, locally sourced artisan woodwork plays a significant role. To maximize the opportunities afforded by the location, extensive glass surfaces are found in many areas, and the openness is further emphasized by the glass railing on the upper level.

The duality of the building determined its overall impact – to simultaneously serve as a communal space for a long vacationing group of friends or a large family while providing everyone with the possibility of retreat, experiencing complete luxury and comfort in their own suite, finding peace.

This dual role is served by the three levels, each receiving a unique role and design. The villa, accommodating sixteen guests, was designed in every aspect, element, and piece of furniture to ensure everyone can comfortably gather in the communal spaces yet retreat sufficiently in their separate suites. Four separate suites are arranged in the villa, each providing the comfort of home with its kitchen, bathrooms, living room, terrace, or garden connection. The house has a total of four kitchens, allowing everyone to prepare their own lunch or dinner. Alternatively, guests can enjoy the convenience of five-star hotel-level service provided by the staff operating the house.

On the lower level, two similar two-bedroom suites with direct garden access, the Garden Suite, and the Orchid Suite, can be found. Access to the middle level, which serves as the central hub of the villa, is via an external spiral staircase. This level functions as a communal space, and guests can also comfortably retreat to the Grand Coral Suite. The almost panoramic Sky Suite with one bedroom is situated on the top level. The spacious areas are maintained on a human scale with various interior design elements, wood, bamboo, natural materials, carefully chosen and unique wallpapers, and textiles.

The clear, generous architectural gestures serve comfort and elegance, reinforced by the recurring arches and vaults, which also facilitate connections between spaces. A common feature of buildings with stepped arrangements on hillsides is that everyone can enjoy an equivalent panorama from their terraces while maintaining good visibility between different levels. However, here, the openness of each level’s panoramic view is combined with the creation of sufficient intimacy through well-composed plant surfaces, precisely placed decorative elements, and architectural solutions such as the arches and vaults themselves. The primary architectural element, consisting of two vaults connecting and separating the two levels, adds duality to the central level, and the arches, extended on the upper floor, provide a subtle yet spectacular closure to the villa.

Given that these are predominantly complex structures serving relaxation and leisure, be it a hotel, a resort paradise, or a villa, it is essential for the envisioned and realized high-quality spatial designs to operate smoothly at the level of practicality and operation. In many cases, solutions had to be found in buildings of significant historical importance to meet today’s high demands for luxury and comfort.

The experiences gained over several decades prove valuable in each project, allowing for tailored solutions that consider individual needs and local traditions in the specific environment. This is evident in his latest work targeting hedonists and design enthusiasts on the popular Thai resort island of Koh Samui.

Situated on a mountain top surrounded by a fantastic panorama, the villa, equipped with every comfort, drew inspiration from the locally experienced sensations. The natural beauty offered by Thailand, the endlessly enchanting shades of the sea, the lush vegetation, delectable cuisine, and the friendly atmosphere converge with the luxury and exceptional uniqueness of the villa.
